Press Release - Spectrum: leading EU telcos publish common position in view of WRC-15

ETNO, the Association representing Europe’s leading telecom operators, has adopted a common position in view of the World Radiocommunication Conference 2015 (WRC-15). The conference will take place on 2 November 2015 in Geneva and it is expected to take very important decisions on the use and assignment of radio-frequency spectrum.

In its position, ETNO encourages European regulators to recognise the key role of the Conference’s decision for the future of the mobile industry.

ETNO Chairman Steven Tas has commented as follows: “Spectrum is the lifeblood of the mobile economy. Powerful and advanced mobile broadband networks are crucial to meet Europe’s booming connectivity needs. The forthcoming WRC-15 is an extraordinary opportunity to identify more spectrum for mobile use, and should not be missed”.

In particular, ETNO and its companies have stressed the following points:

  • The WRC-15 should lead to additional identification of spectrum for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) in order to satisfy the exponential rise of data traffic on mobile broadband networks;
  • ETNO expects confirmation of the allocation to the Mobile Service and identification for IMT systems of the band 694-790 MHz, as well as better regulatory conditions for the development of 700 MHz mobile broadband networks across Europe;
  • The agenda for WRC-19 shall contain an Agenda Item to identify and allocate additional spectrum for 5G.
