ETNO statement on the common EU approach to 5G network security

Brussels, 26 March 2019 – The European Commission has today presented a recommendation for establishing a “common EU approach to the security of 5G networks”.

ETNO, the Association representing Europe’s leading telecom operators, welcomes the Commission plan to develop a harmonised and fact-based approach to security of digital networks, in order to solve global security challenges.

We share the view that security is a top priority, and encourage increased collaboration and transparency across sectors and borders, to meet a rapidly changing security threat landscape.

Telecoms networks and services are already today subject to high security standards and strict regulation. In this context, the 5G ecosystem is designed to be trustworthy and 5G systems offer additional opportunities to secure networks, including network slicing, network virtualisation, authentication and encryption.

The telecoms sector is mobilising significant investment for a timely delivery of 5G, which is a crucial enabler of socio-economic growth for all sectors of economy and society. For this reason, we believe that swiftly achieving a harmonised European approach is key to ensure consistency and predictability across markets.

Lise Fuhr, ETNO Director General, said: “Security is in the telcos’ DNA and it is on the top of our agenda. 5G will be pivotal to the development of EU industries and innovation. 5G, by design, means more, not less security. We support a fact-based and harmonised approach to network security in Europe”.
