Join the FT’s Global Boardroom: 5G and recovery

When the world eventually emerges from the worst of the pandemic, there are hopes that better connectivity - spurred by the widespread adoption of 5G - will represent a shot in the arm for business, society and perhaps even geopolitics. Could greater automation transform key areas such as transport and cities, and to what extent can this be harnessed to address climate change?

Lise Fuhr, ETNO Director General, will join top speakers from Telefonica, Qualcomm and McKinsey for a 5G conversation at the FT’s Global Boardroom event on May 6. Register here for this and for other top conversations, taking place online from May 4 to May 6, and comprising speakers such as US Secretary of State Blinken, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Co-Chair Melinda Gates, European Commission EVP Vestager and an additional 130 senior speakers.

Artificial Intelligence:
Message by President Ursula von der Leyen

The European Commission’s approach on Artificial Intelligence centres around excellence and trust. It aims to boost the EU's research and industrial capacity..

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of strategic importance and a key driver of economic development. It can bring solutions to many societal challenges from treating diseases to minimising the environmental impact of farming. However, there are socio-economic, legal and ethical impacts of AI that have to be carefully addressed.

The Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect) develops and implements policies to make Europe fit for the digital age. We invest in research, innovation, deployment and uptake of trustworthy and green digital technologies that improve our economy and people’s lives. Through funding, legislation and policy initiatives, we help ensure European leadership and independence in critical digital technologies(such as Artificial Intelligence, Common Data Spaces, high-performance computing, 5G, micro-electronics, blockchain and quantum).

These numbers are encouraging but still in rural areas 40% of Europeans have no access to fast broadband connections. This means no access to many different opportunities. With #NextGenerationEU investments we can change this number bit.ly/2ftsy4z #DigitalEU
