Transatlantic Tech Relations:
Joint Statement of the Telecom Industry

ETNO and USTelecom – The Broadband Association, the leading trade associations for telecom operators and broadband providers in the EU and the U.S. respectively, welcome the strengthening of the transatlantic dialogue on industrial and policy approaches to technology.

The launch of a new EU-U.S. “Trade and Technology Council (TTC)” is an important milestone in the longstanding tradition of dialogue and constructive coordination between Washington D.C. and Brussels. This comes at an especially opportune moment when both sides of the Atlantic are reflecting on how to modernize digital policies and regulations for the years to come.

ETNO and USTelecom along with our member companies are resolute in our support of a continued and results focused transatlantic policy dialogue and stand ready to contribute in concrete and practical ways along with institutional partners in Washington D.C., in Brussels and across European capitals to realize a shared, confident and equitable vision for the digital future of all our citizens.

Video recording of our Digital Policy Day webinar, with MLex

The webinar welcomed 20+ speakers, 4 moderators and featured 4 digital topics that are relevant to all of us, today: digital networks, sustainability, digital services, and digital competition. The video replay is now avaiable!
Lise Fuhr, ETNO Director General, welcomed all participants and shared 4 stats on the opportunities and challenges in the digital ecosystem of today:
  • Sustainability, 15%.This is the reduction of CO2 emissions if we fully deploy #digital solutions, like 5G and the digital services that go with it, according to ETNO-BCG report. The ICT industry works to reduce its impact, policies can enable the potential further
  • Networks, 300 bn eur. A number that represents the additional investment needed in Europe to achieve a full 5G & a full fibre vision. The work of the European Commission and BEREC is fundamental, while capital investment by telcos is going up
  • Digital Services, 10k.This is the number of all micro and small online platforms in Europe. However, as the DSA impact assessment of the European Commission noted, the European public space is de facto reduced to only a handful of very large platforms
  • Competition, 70%.This is the share of the platform economy held by the world’s top 7 tech companies, according to European Commissions’s DMA impact assessment. Addressing the unbalances of power is particularly important for our economies and societies
Lise’s keynote introduction as well as all 4 panels are now available for replay, below!
