Election of Roberta Metsola as European Parliament President

On 18 January, the Maltese centre-right MEP Roberta Metsola was elected as the new President of the European Parliament after the passing of former President David Sassoli. As Ms. Metsola was first Vice-President, she took over as acting President over the past week. Metsola won 458 votes in the first round of balloting.

With a background in law, she served as Malta’s legal and judicial cooperation attaché at the Maltese permanent representation to the EU, and from 2012-2013 as legal adviser to former High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton.
As an MEP, President Metsola called for the Parliament to be at the forefront of the fight against climate change and leading the transition towards a climate-neutral and digitized continent.

Likewise, she has spoken for the roll-out of universal ‘digital rights’ for all Europeans, and to better educate and equip young and old with the necessary tools for the digital world. She has also issued certain tech-related written questions to the European Commission, such as the use of AI in journalism and mobile internet speeds in the EU.
