ETNO supports EU-Ukraine Operators’ Joint Statement on connectivity for Ukrainian refugees

Connectivity is the cornerstone of our societies, and it becomes a lifeline during times of crisis. As as soon as the war against Ukraine started, European telecom operators stepped in with extensive voluntary measures. Such measures included providing free or heavily discounted connectivity for Ukrainian people residing in the EU as well as the incoming refugees. Telecom operators also set up free Wi-Fi hotspots, local SIM cards and a series of humanitarian actions.

The Joint Statement shows the resolve of European telecom operators in continuing to support people in need. As the crisis unfolds, we will remain actively engaged with governments and EU institutions to ensure that refugees continue receiving the help they need.

The leadership of Executive Vice-president Vestager and Commissioner Breton, as well as the hard work of DG Connect and BEREC were key to this initiative. We look forward to continuing collaborating on these extremely important matters.

How can telcos make a difference in the Data Act?

Data is an essential resource with the potential to foster economic growth, competitiveness, innovation and job creation. Europe counts the world’s strongest industrial base and has the technologies and skills to become a leader in this new data economy. Lise Fuhr explained at this debate how telcos can make a difference for Europe’s digital ecosystem:
  •  Telcos are enablers for IoT: 5G will enable the rapid growth of IoT devices, leading to a massive amount of data generated, which will create resources for data analytics and AI in Europe,
  • The Data Act is also about B2G data sharing, in exceptional situations, such as public emergencies. Telcos have been collaborating with public authorities for years (to manage natural disasters, environmental pollution, avoid COVID19 spreading),
  • Lastly, the Data Act introduces regulatory requirements on cloud, edge and other data processing services providers. It is important that the Data Act paves the way for a thriving and competitive cloud market in Europe.
