Celebrating “Girls in ICT day”

Our Director General Lise Fuhr has a special message on today’s occasion: “The “Girls in ICT” day is a celebration that is very close to my heart. I am a strong believer that we must tackle the gender-balance issue at all levels: from access to digital networks and IT equipment, to skills and education, as well as representation of women at higher hierarchical levels in ICT companies.

By doing so, we will have more diverse ideas, innovations and representation of our society in the products and services of tomorrow. In Europe, we will also move closer to achieving one pillar of the #EUDigitalDecade targets: full gender convergence by 2030. Last but not least, we will tackle stereotypes and biases that hinder girls to join the mesmerizing #STEM world.

I look forward to continuing tackling the above through the work at ECSO’s Women4Cyber Foundation – and I encourage you to get the book that specifically asks for more diversity in the sector (available here). I also look forward to advocating for more diversity within the ICT sector, where we as telcos have achieved some progress but the route to full gender equilibrium is still uphill.

It is only by addressing the lack of diversity that we can change status quo so I hope you - men and women - will join me in campaigning for more women in ICT!”

EU Digital Markets Act
and Digital Services Act explained

While the benefits of the digital transformation are evident, the dominant position gained by some of tech platforms gives them significant advantages over competitors, but also undue influence over democracy, fundamental rights, societies and the economy. They often determine future innovations or consumer choice and serve as so-called gatekeepers between businesses and internet users.

To address this imbalance, the EU is working on upgrading the current rules governing digital services by introducing the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the Digital Services Act (DSA), which will create a single set of rules applicable across the EU.
