Europe’s telecommunication industry welcomes the Data Act and supports the objective of fostering data sharing and re-use across sectors and national borders in the single market.

As the European Commission states in the proposal, the regulation needs to strike a delicate balance between opening access to potentially valuable data sets, while preserving economic incentives to innovate and invest in connected products and related services, and the data driven economy.

Legislators should address some outstanding issues in Business to Government and Business to Business data sharing and switching between data processing services.

Mari-Noëlle Jégo-Laveissière, Deputy CEO, Orange

Ms. Jégo-Laveissière highlighted different initiatives in which telecom operators and content application providers are working together. They include RCS or lighter operative systems to develop smartphones in Africa. Moreover, “there are also topics where collaboration is tougher. We really want to share the investment for the extra cost for the connectivity. It is not always easy, but we will keep discussing it”, she added.
